In 1974, just out of his Henry Ford Ophthalmology residency, Dr. Charles H Greenberg opened his office on Big Beaver Rd, opposite the brand new one-story Somerset Mall in Troy, and near where he and his young family lived. He had high hopes that the new suburb would be a great place to start a new practice. His first patients were those who followed him all the way from Detroit to continue being cared for by him at his new office in Troy. The 3001 W Big Beaver office building had just been completed and Greenberg Laser Eye Center and Schubot Jewelers were its first tenants, picking suites at the first floor entrances. Dr. Greenberg joined the medical staff of several local hospitals including William Beaumont Hospital Royal Oak where along with their well-trained staff, he utilized their high-tech equipment, volunteered in the Eye Clinic and taught Ophthalmology residents. In 1977, he joined the newly built Troy Beaumont Hospital, where he was one of just two ophthalmologists on staff for many years. It was rewarding to see his patients bringing in their family and referring acquaintances to his young practice. As the office got busier, the staff size increased, and the office expanded to include the adjacent suite. In 1991, as LASIK was debuting in Europe, he took a trip to Germany to learn the latest technique and then became the first Michigan physician to offer his patients this revolutionary sight improving procedure, traveling to Windsor and practicing under his Canadian medical license until LASIK was later approved in the USA. Soon after, his daughter, Dr. Dana Greenberg joined Greenberg Laser Eye Center, after completing her medical training and residency in Boston, and the two Drs Greenberg practiced together for 14 more years before Dr. Charles Greenberg slowed his office pace. Dr Dana Greenberg continues to steer the practice, implementing the latest surgical techniques and innovation. It is due to the strong foundation of medical excellence and compassion that Greenberg Laser Eye Center has held its high reputation since its foundation 50 years ago this year.
